Detroit released A’s third baseman Brandon Inge just two weeks to the day. Inge spent the entirety of his 12-year career prior to his release. Since the Tigers drafted him in 1998, he had been there and he played in 1,408 games with the club. He had one of his worst seasons in 2011 and had another slow start in 2012. This made the Tigers to cut ties.
The 34-year-old quickly signed a contract with the A’s to become the team’s everyday third baseman. With his new team, he has seven hits in 30 at-bats (.233). The few hits have had an impact, even though the average is not great. He has hit two home runs and driven in nine RBIs.
The Tigers had a fast start to the season, but after Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to the Mariners they are now at .500 (15-15). They were 9-3 after beating Kansas City April 18, but are 6-12 since. Avila is expected to be back for the opener against the A’s to catch Max Scherzer, who coming off an outing in which he limited the White Sox to four hits and one run in seven innings. 38-year-old right-hander Bartolo Colon will oppose Scherzer. Alex Avila has two career hits in three at-bats against Colon. Both his hits were home runs. This season, Colon is 3-2 with a 2.83 ERA. in 24 career appearances and 23 starts against Detroit, he has 5.25 ERA.
This season, the A’s have 30 stolen bases. This is the second most in the Majors behind Miami and the most in the American League. Most of those steals are in the Majors and nine of them have been of third base. Ramon Santiago in his career is 11-for-20 (.550) against Colon with three doubles, a triple and three RBIs. The Tigers, as a team have hit .228 against the A’s over the past two seasons.
